Who can participate in the Student Ambassador program?

High school or college students, 16 years or older

Must have reliable transportation and the ability to drive to different event locations

Must be able to pass a drug screen and a motor vehicle record (MVR) check

Note: Students under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a release form for the drug screen, MVR check, and to work in the program.

What is the schedule for Student Ambassadors?

There is no set schedule for Student Ambassadors, it will be on an as-needed basis.  A group text will be sent out when Student Ambassadors are needed for an event.

The date, time, location, event description, and the number of Student Ambassadors needed will be included in the group text.  The first to respond, up to the number of Student Ambassadors that are needed for the event, will be the ones selected to work.

What if I can’t work an event after I agreed to work?

Should a Student Ambassador not be able to work an event that they committed to work, he/she will need to call the program coordinator at least 24 hours before the event.  A text will be sent out to the group again requesting an additional Student Ambassador and the first student to respond will be accepted.

What if I’m in school or can’t work late because of school?

There may be occasions that minors, or Student Ambassadors who are still in high school, may not be allowed to participate due to school or TN Labor Laws for Minors, on these occasions, group texts will only be sent out to the Student Ambassadors who are in college.

Where will the events be held?

Student Ambassadors will be able to select the events they would like to work and can base their decision to work on the location of the event.  They will be required to provide their own transportation to and from the events.

Note:  Student Ambassadors who are minors will not be required to run errands before, during, or after the event.

The events could be within any of the following counties:

  • Bedford
  • Davidson
  • Franklin
  • Giles
  • Maury
  • Marshall
  • Rutherford
  • Williamson
  • Wilson

How much does this pay?

Student Ambassadors will be paid $14/hr. starting at the time they arrive at the event until the time they leave the event.  A time sheet will be completed at each event and signed off by the United employee who is overseeing the Student Ambassadors.   A workweek is considered Sunday at 12 a.m. to Saturday. to 11:59 p.m.

Paychecks will be direct deposited every other Friday and any required taxes will be withheld.   All students will need to have a bank account in order to be paid.  No paper checks will be issued.

How often will I be required to work in order to stay in the program?

Student Ambassadors must work at least one event in a rolling six-month period in order to remain on the active Student Ambassador list.  Any inactive Student Ambassadors will be removed and will be required to reapply and be accepted into the program in order to become active again.

What if I can’t work because people respond to the texts faster than I can?

If you are unable to accept an assignment because others respond before you do, please reach out to the program coordinator and discuss your options.  You can also visit this website to see upcoming events and be ready to accept the assignment when it becomes available.

What will I need to wear?

A company shirt will be given to each participant and should be worn at each event.  It is the responsibility of the student to keep the shirt cleaned and pressed.  Clean, hole and fray-free jeans and tennis shoes may be worn with the company shirt. Khaki pants may also be worn.   The company shirt must be tucked in and a belt must be worn at all events.

Dress requirements may be changed at the discretion of the program coordinator.

How will I know what to do or say at the events?

There may be required training sessions that all Student Ambassadors must attend.  These will be paid sessions.  You will be taught how to talk with potential customers and what to do if you don’t know the answer to questions.

What do you expect from me while acting as a Student Ambassador?

Professionalism is always expected.  If the behavior of a Student Ambassador does not meet professional expectations, the Student Ambassador may be released without notice.

Will I be in danger while working?

Safety is United’s primary concern.  At every event, United will have adult employees present to oversee the Student Ambassadors.  If the event requires students to place door hangers at homes, students will be in pairs and will attend safety training prior to participating.

Each Student Ambassador will have contact information for the program coordinator as well as a contact name and number in case there are questions or a non-life-threatening emergency.

Does working in the Student Ambassador program mean I’m an official United employee?

This program is on an on-call, as-needed basis only and does not constitute an agreement of employment.  This position will not receive any benefits from United other than the agreed upon pay by hour.
