United Awarded CARES Act Grant For Internet Upgrades

For Low Bandwidth Zones

United is excited to announce its commitment to bring fiber internet to areas that have lower than 25 Mbps bandwidth by the end of 2020. United will invest $1.3 million of their own funding in addition to $5.2 million in grant funding from the Tennessee Emergency Broadband Fund. The build-out for upgraded fiber internet has been approved for designated areas in Bedford, Rutherford, Marshall and Williamson Counties.

Highlights
  • United Communications has been awarded $5.2 million in grants from the Tennessee Emergency Broadband Fund to enhance broadband for areas receiving less than 25 Mbps/3 Mbps.
  • While the Grant allocates $5.2 million, United will invest an additional $1.3 million of its own funding for this fiber build-out.
  • Our grants cover portions of Bedford and Rutherford, Marshall, and Williamson counties; totaling 1,761 homes.
  • Grant expansion will bring fiber internet access to 1,761 homes and must be completed by Dec. 15, 2020.
  • United had to apply and justify this funding as it relates to COVID-19 impact and the need for better work-from-home, learn remotely and telemedicine.
  • This grant will accelerate United’s Middle Tennessee Connectivity Initiative—a long-term mission to connect rural, historically underserved areas with high-speed internet.
  • After completion of grant and starting in January 2021, areas passed along the fiber route will be built-out as well.
