At United Communications, we’re more than just the leading Middle Tennessee fiber internet provider— we’re committed to the well-being of our neighbors and actively involved in the communities we serve. One of the most impactful ways we do that is by investing in students—whether through broadband expansion in local schools, our student ambassador program, or our annual scholarship program for high school seniors.
Since 2010, the United Community Foundation has awarded over $55,000 in merit-based scholarships to 26 students in Middle Tennessee.
This year, I’m proud to share that we’re taking it even further by doubling the scholarship amount. Previously, recipients received $1,000 per year (up to $4,000 total). Now, we’re awarding $2,000 per year, for up to four years—an $8,000 investment in each recipient’s educational goals. We’re thrilled to offer even more support to help students reach a brighter future.
United Communications Scholarship FAQs
If you or someone you know is a high school senior, here’s everything you need to know about applying.
1. Who can apply for the scholarship?
Originally, this scholarship was created to support students directly related to United Communications employees. In recent years, we’ve expanded eligibility to include all graduating high school seniors in Bedford, Franklin, Marshall, Maury, Rutherford, Williamson, and Wilson counties, as well as children of United employees.
2. How many scholarships are available, and how much is awarded?
This year, we will award scholarships to five students. Each recipient will receive $2,000 per year for up to four years, to help cover college tuition, vocational training, or other post-secondary education expenses.
3. What are the selection criteria, and who selects the winners?
Scholarship recipients are chosen by a panel of judges affiliated with the United Community Foundation. Selection criteria include:
- GPA
- Honors and awards
- Leadership positions
- Volunteer activities
- A 300-500 word essay
4. What advice do you have for students applying for the scholarship?
Take your time with the essay! While academic achievements and extracurricular activities are important, your essay is a crucial opportunity to showcase your unique personality, goals, and aspirations. Don’t hesitate to use all 500 words to tell your story and demonstrate your commitment to your future.
5. How do you apply, and when is the deadline?
Applications can be submitted here from February 28, 2025, through March 28, 2025.
