If your internet goes down today, chances are it affects a lot more than your laptop. Maybe your first video meeting freezes halfway through a presentation. Your kids can’t finish their homework online. Your security camera suddenly stops loading while you’re away from home. Or maybe movie night turns into buffering night.
After working in technical support for years, I’ve learned that most internet problems aren’t as complicated as they seem. Sometimes it’s one device that needs attention. Other times, a quick router reset will solve the issue. The good news is that many internet problems can be fixed in just a few minutes.
As a tech support lead at United, I spend my days helping our technicians solve problems and making sure our customers have a great experience. One thing I’ve learned is that a little troubleshooting can go a long way. And if our first attempts don’t solve the issue, I will help coordinate the next steps until the problem is resolved.

5 Internet Troubleshooting Tips to Address Wi-Fi Issues On Your Own
Here are a few troubleshooting steps I recommend to help resolve many of the most common issues we see:
Step 1: Ask This Question First
One of the first questions I ask customers who call with internet issues is:
Is this happening on one device or every device in the house?
This tells us a lot. If it’s only your smart TV that’s offline, the problem probably isn’t your internet connection. It’s likely a specific device. If every phone, computer, TV, and smart speaker suddenly loses connection, then it’s time to look at your router, modem, or internet service.
It sounds simple, but this question helps narrow down the problem faster than almost anything else.
Step 2: If It’s Just One Device, Start There
Today’s homes have dozens of connected devices, including smart TVs, doorbells, thermostats, security cameras, gaming consoles, smart speakers, and robot vacuums. Every now and then, one of them decides it doesn’t want to cooperate. The good news is you usually don’t need to restart your entire home network to fix it.
Instead, try these steps:
- Ensure the nonworking device has power.
- Unplug it for about 30 seconds before plugging it back in. Many devices only enter sleep mode when you press the power button, so unplugging gives them a true restart.
- Delete your Wi-Fi network from the device.
- Reconnect your Wi-Fi network on the device.
Many times, one stubborn device needs a fresh connection.

Step 3: If Everything Is Offline, Restart Your Equipment
Depending on your setup, you may have several devices connected to your internet service. If all the devices in your home have lost internet access, it’s time to restart your equipment.
Most United fiber internet customers have both a router and a single Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which is the fiber version of a modem. Start by unplugging your ONT (or modem) and your router. Then, wait at least 30 seconds before plugging them both back in.
Once everything has restarted, check the indicator lights on each device to make sure they’re showing a normal connection before testing your internet again.
If you aren’t using United’s equipment and have two separate devices, plug the ONT (or modem) back in first and give it a minute or two to reconnect before powering on your router.
United Customer Tip: If you’re using United equipment, our local support team can often run remote diagnostics to check signal levels, equipment health, and other potential issues without having you dig through complicated settings.
Step 4: Next, Check the Basics
Sometimes the easiest explanation is the right one. Take a quick look at your setup to see if a simple adjustment can resolve the issue.
- Make sure every cable is securely connected.
- Check that your ONT/modem and router both have power.
- Look for unusual status lights.
- If your equipment connects outside your home, check for obvious weather damage if it’s safe to do so.
- If your neighborhood recently lost power, remember that commercial power outages can sometimes affect internet service until utilities complete restoration.
A quick inspection only takes a minute and can often reveal an issue.

Step 5: Let Your Technology Help You Troubleshoot
Modern Wi-Fi equipment offers much more information than most people realize.
If you’re using United’s Wi-Fi equipment, the UControl app lets you see which devices are connected, check your network status, restart your router remotely, and manage your home network from almost anywhere.
These tools can save you time and help identify problems before they become bigger headaches.
When You Call United, Here’s What Happens Next
If you’ve ever spent twenty minutes talking to an automated phone system with a national provider before finally reaching a real person, you’re not alone. It’s one of the reasons nobody enjoys calling tech support.
That’s one of the biggest differences customers notice after switching to United.
When someone calls our local support team, they’re typically speaking with a real person in well under a minute. From there, our technicians immediately begin looking behind the scenes. We can see whether there’s an outage nearby, check the health of your Wi-Fi if you’re using United’s equipment, review signal levels, identify equipment alarms, and even see recent activity on your account.
Instead of walking through a long script of generic troubleshooting questions, we can usually narrow down the problem within the first few minutes. Sometimes the fix is easy enough to solve over the phone. If a technician is needed, we can often schedule a visit the same day or the very next day.
That’s one advantage of working with an internet company whose support team lives and works right here in Middle Tennessee.
Internet Slower in Different Areas of Your House?
One of the biggest changes I’ve seen over the past few years is how people use Wi-Fi.
It used to be one router serving a couple of laptops. Today, many homes have mesh Wi-Fi systems, dozens of connected devices, and people working, learning, gaming, and streaming all at the same time.
Sometimes the internet isn’t actually slow. Your Wi-Fi coverage is simply struggling in one part of the house. If your house has multiple floors, thick walls, or lots of connected devices, your router may be too far away from where you’re using it.
That’s where mesh Wi-Fi systems shine. Unlike traditional routers, a whole-home coverage system uses multiple access points to create one seamless Wi-Fi network throughout your home. That means stronger coverage in upstairs bedrooms, home offices, garages, patios, and bonus rooms without constantly reconnecting to different networks.
If you’re planning to upgrade your home network, United offers professionally installed Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 whole-home coverage designed to keep every corner of your home connected.
