A History of Innovation
United Communications is on the cutting edge of technology, but our roots reach back to 1947.
Headquartered in Chapel Hill, Tennessee, and formerly known as United Telephone Company, we made a name for ourselves in Middle Tennessee by providing the highest-quality phone service in suburban and rural markets where other providers refused to serve.
Today, we’re a leading provider of advanced communications services, supplying residents and businesses with high-speed internet, and voice service and maintaining our commitment to the communities we serve, our customers, our employees, and our owners.
Look back through United's story
The company, then known as Cities Telephone Company, files its charter of incorporation in Tennessee.
R. Lee Wheat founded Cities with his brother, Dr. Tom Wheat. At the time, Cities was comprised of four exchanges: Nolensville, College Grove, Chapel Hill, and Belfast.L.O. Brayton, Jr. and Elmer Bivens assemble a group of local, seasoned telephone investors to purchase Cities.
Cities soon acquired four additional exchanges: Estill Springs, Flat Creek, Unionville, and Fosterville. Our Mission
We enrich our communities and the lives of our neighbors through reliable connections and passionate service.
Our Company Values
- Safety – we assure the safety of everything we do.
- Service – we are responsive, informed, and easy to do business with.
- United – we communicate and collaborate.
- Integrity – we keep our promises and do the right thing even when no one is watching.
- Driven – we fight to serve and win customers.
On a Mission to Connect the Under-Connected
United continues to build our fiber network throughout Middle Tennessee cities, towns and rural communities. We believe everyone deserves reliable, high-speed internet service. Through our Project UNITE initiative, United Communications is bringing high-speed internet service options to some of the most rural communities in Middle Tennessee, while staying true to our roots of providing reliable service and dedicated local support.
In partnership with Middle Tennessee Electric and Duck River Electric, we’re working together to build a more connected Tennessee.
