A History of Innovation

United Communications is on the cutting edge of technology, but our roots reach back to 1947.

Headquartered in Chapel Hill, Tennessee, and formerly known as United Telephone Company, we made a name for ourselves in Middle Tennessee by providing the highest-quality phone service in suburban and rural markets where other providers refused to serve.

Today, we’re a leading provider of advanced communications services, supplying residents and businesses with high-speed internet, and voice service and maintaining our commitment to the communities we serve, our customers, our employees, and our owners.

Look back through United's story

1947

The company, then known as Cities Telephone Company, files its charter of incorporation in Tennessee.

R. Lee Wheat founded Cities with his brother, Dr. Tom Wheat. At the time, Cities was comprised of four exchanges: Nolensville, College Grove, Chapel Hill, and Belfast.
1950s

L.O. Brayton, Jr. and Elmer Bivens assemble a group of local, seasoned telephone investors to purchase Cities.

Cities soon acquired four additional exchanges: Estill Springs, Flat Creek, Unionville, and Fosterville.
1960
Cities Telephone Company changes its name to United Telephone Company and begins a 51-year run of leadership by local investors and their descendants.
2011
United Communications continues a strong tradition of local service with a focus on innovation. Telecom industry veterans Gene Johnson and William Bradford acquired United. From 2011 through 2018, United expanded rapidly, establishing itself as one of the leading internet providers in the State of Tennessee.
2017
United acquires Athena Broadband, the leading provider of fixed wireless broadband in Middle Tennessee.
2018
United forms a strategic partnership with Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation, the second largest electric cooperative in the country, to expand broadband and smart grid services to their members. MTE purchases a majority ownership in United.
