Vinny Black of Chapel Hill is one of three winners in United’s 2024 “Holiday Connections” giveaway and received a $500 Marriott gift certificate. United recently visited with Vinny, who joined us from home on a video conference to tell us about himself and his customer experience.
Building a healthy community requires a tremendous amount of effort and resources. Fortunately, Middle Tennessee residents have a tireless champion in Vinny Black, who works for the state health department as a Healthy Development Coordinator.
“I work out of our regional office in East Nashville and serve all the counties that touch Nashville, plus a few other counties in the region,” says Vinny. “I’m responsible for helping communities find funding to improve the quality of life for everyone who lives and works there.”
When he’s not on the road for meetings across Middle Tennessee, Vinny will often work remotely from home. Having a fast, reliable internet connection is critical for his job.
With all that a community requires to function, Vinny advocates for a long list of important investments and improvements that can have a positive impact on a neighborhood.
“Sidewalks and bike lanes, food security, affordable housing—even broadband internet access is part of a healthy community and a financially successful community, so that’s also part of my job,” says Vinny.
A Murfreesboro native, Vinny, and his wife, Felicia, moved to Chapel Hill in 2018 after searching for a right-sized affordable home in a community where they felt a genuine connection.
Soon after moving to Chapel Hill, Vinny pulled into the parking lot at work about 20 minutes early and decided to try and take care of getting an internet provider in the time he had.
“The lady who answered had a strong Southern accent, so I asked her where she was located and she said, ‘Oh, I’m right here in Chapel Hill, honey,’” Vinny recalls.
Founded back in 1947 as a rural telephone provider, United first set up shop in Chapel Hill and continues operating a major operations center in its hometown at 120 Taylor Street. 77 years later, United offers Middle Tennessee’s fastest internet service with speeds of up to 8 Gig and rock-solid reliability.
“The thing about the work I do is that I’m big on supporting my local community,” he adds. “I was speaking with someone who lives and works in Chapel Hill, and that personal touch was just icing on the cake.”
During a single phone call that took less time than it takes to finish a cup of coffee, Vinny had signed up for United Communications and checked off one of the most important tasks on his to-do list as a new homeowner.
Recently, he upgraded to United’s 1 Gig fiber broadband service. And unlike other providers, Vinny and his family aren’t restricted by monthly data caps, locked in by a contract, or forced to pay hidden fees.
“Working with a local company like United is a point of pride for me, and they’ve been good people to work with,” says Vinny.
United Communications is grateful to have Vinny as an internet customer and thankful for the time and talent he invests into making Middle Tennessee a healthy, vibrant place to call home.
