If you’ve ever tried to figure out how much internet speed you actually need, you’ve probably found yourself buried in options, like 300 Mbps, 1 Gig, 2 Gig, and 8 Gig. And then there’s the glossary of phrases and terms like: bandwidth, Wi-Fi, upload speeds, download speeds, fiber, 5G.
I’ve had plenty of conversations with customers where we eventually get to the same question: “OK, but what does all of that actually mean for me?” It’s easy to get caught up in the numbers and terminology. What most people really want to know is pretty simple: Will my internet work well for the way I use it?
My team and I talk through this with customers all the time. At United, we believe it shouldn’t be hard to get the internet service you need. That starts with helping people understand what they’re actually paying for and what they really need.
We’ll ask how many people are in the home, what they use the internet for, how many smart devices they have and what they’re experiencing with their current internet. Once we understand how someone actually uses their Wi-Fi connection, it’s very easy to figure out what makes sense.
In our United Communications Internet FAQs Guide, we cover the basics of internet speeds, including Mbps vs. Gbps, upload and download speeds, fiber vs. other connection types, and the factors that can affect your connection quality.
This blog is about taking a step back and understanding internet services on a personal level.
Why More Speed Isn’t Always Better
I think there’s a temptation to assume that more bandwidth and internet speed is always better. But that’s not necessarily true: More bandwidth and speed is only better if your household can actually use it. If you live alone, have a few internet devices, and mostly use them to browse, stream and check email, you may not notice much difference between 1 Gig and a much faster plan.
On the other hand, a busy household can put a lot more bandwidth demand on a connection. Multiple people working from home, streaming, gaming, making video calls, uploading large files, and using dozens of connected devices can add up quickly. That’s where having enough bandwidth becomes especially important.
The sweet spot is finding enough speed and bandwidth to match your household’s unique internet needs.
Start With How Your Household Uses the Internet
The number of people in your house matters, but it isn’t the whole story. Two people can use wildly different amounts of bandwidth depending on what they’re doing online and what devices they’re using to connect.
Your internet bandwidth should be strong enough to handle all the ways you and your family connect, but I’ve found this is where people can often get tripped up.
It’s easy to look at the number of people or devices in your house and assume there’s a simple formula for how much speed you need. In reality, what those people are doing online usually matters more.
So before you start comparing plans, ask yourself a few questions about your household:
- How many people regularly use the internet?
- How many devices are connected?
- How often are multiple people online at the same time?
- Does anyone work or attend school from home?
- Do you regularly stream in 4K?
- Do you play online games?
- Do you upload large files or back up photos and videos?
- Do you have a lot of (more than 3) smart-home devices?
- Do you have a larger home where Wi-Fi extended coverage can be challenging?
Those answers will tell you much more than a device-count chart will. When my team talks with customers about their internet needs, we ask them questions like these. The goal isn’t to automatically recommend the fastest plan; it’s to understand what the household actually needs.
Choose a United Communications Internet that Fits Your Lifestyle
Our internet plans are designed to match the different ways our customers connect. That means offering a range of speeds, from a reliable option for everyday needs to multi-gig plans designed for households that demand more from their internet. Here’s a closer look at what each speed can handle:
Easy Start: (300 Mbps)
For a smaller household with fairly simple internet usage, that can be plenty.
Think light browsing, email, social media, streaming your favorite shows, and staying connected without heavy simultaneous use of multiple devices.
Home Advantage: (1 Gig)
For households with straightforward internet needs, 1 Gig provides plenty of speed for everyday browsing, streaming, video calls, online gaming, and connected devices. It’s a strong option for keeping the things you use every day running smoothly.
Everyday Plus: (2 Gig)
For many households, 2 Gig hits the sweet spot. It gives you extra speed and bandwidth when multiple people and devices are online at the same time, whether you’re working from home, streaming, gaming, making video calls, or uploading large files. It also gives you room for your internet needs to grow as you add more connected devices and bandwidth-heavy activities.
Premier Plus: (8 Gig)
This is our most advanced, top-tier residential option. It was built for households that want the best possible internet experience to meet their demands. Think remote professionals, content creators, large smart-home setups, serious gamers, or anyone regularly working with large files or demanding online-connected applications at once. Our Premier Plus Plan allows customers to choose which devices get more bandwidth and provides a VIP support line if they have issues.

What Can Affect Your Internet Experience?
I’ve talked with plenty of people who assume they need to move to a faster plan when something isn’t working how they expect. Sometimes they do. Sometimes the problem is somewhere else.
Your internet speed is just one piece of the puzzle. Things like Wi-Fi coverage, your router, the device you’re using and how many people are online at the same time can all affect how your connection feels. Here’s a quick video that explains how it works:
For example, if your smart TV buffers but everything else in the house works normally, you may not need a faster internet plan. The problem could be the TV’s Wi-Fi connection. If your connection slows down every time everyone gets online at night, though, you may have outgrown your current speed.
If you’re already a United customer, you can also use our internet troubleshooting guide. And if something doesn’t look right, give our team a call. You shouldn’t have to become your own internet technician to figure it out.
So, Which Plan Is Right for You?
When I think about helping a customer choose an internet plan, I don’t think the answer is simply “the fastest one.” It’s about finding the connection that works well for the household, matches how they actually use the internet, and gives them enough room to grow.
Because the goal isn’t simply to have the fastest internet on the block. It’s to have internet that works when you need it, where you need it, without the headaches.
That’s what we’re trying to deliver every day. Take a look at United’s internet plans and find the speed that makes sense for your household.
