Homegrown in Franklin: Expanding Fiber in the Community We Call Home

Franklin, Tennessee isn’t just a place where we do business—it’s where we live, raise our families, and build lasting relationships. As a member of this incredible community, I’ve experienced firsthand what makes Franklin so unique: a spirit of belonging, collaboration, and genuine care for others that you don’t find just anywhere.

Those values played a big role in our decision to move United Communications’ headquarters here back in 2020, and they’re the same reasons we’re deepening our commitment again in 2025. Through new investments and the next phase of our network expansion, we’re proud to be building a stronger, more connected future for all of Middle Tennessee.

So, as we celebrate five years of calling Franklin home, I want to take a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come and to share more about the exciting growth still ahead.

Rooted in Franklin, Built for All Middle Tennessee

United Communications was founded nearly 80 years ago as a telephone company dedicated to connecting communities. While technology has changed dramatically since our start as a rural telephone company, that mission remains at the heart of everything we do.

Today, our advanced fiber network spans 11 counties, including rapidly growing areas like Smyrna, Nolensville, and Murfreesboro, but Franklin continues to hold a special place in our journey. As our headquarters, Franklin is where many of our biggest ideas for here and all of Middle Tennessee start to take shape.

More Than Just Internet: How United is Growing with Franklin

In recent years, you may have seen new names enter the broadband conversation here in Franklin. National providers are moving in, drawn by the opportunity to tap into a growing market, not out of a sense of connection to the community.

At United, we’re different. Our roots in Williamson County stretch back more than 75 years. This isn’t just another service area for us—it’s home.

Here are a few of the ways we’re continuing to grow alongside Franklin with a focus on connection, care, and community:

1. Expanding Fiber Internet Access Across Williamson County

It’s easy to look at Williamson County’s prosperity and assume everyone has access to the necessities of modern life, including high-speed internet. But the reality is that thousands of our neighbors—families and businesses alike—still lack adequate access. This means they’re missing out on opportunities for education, economic growth, and simple connectivity that many of us take for granted.

As a company, we believe everyone deserves reliable, high-speed internet, so we’ve made it our mission to close this digital divide in Williamson County. No other internet provider in this region matches our deep-rooted commitment to this goal.

2. Innovation That Benefits Our Community

We understand that fast, reliable internet is the backbone of modern life for families and businesses. That’s why we’re not just expanding—we’re innovating to provide the best possible service right here in Williamson County and the rest of Middle Tennessee.

We’ve built a fiber optic network that rivals—and, in my opinion, outperforms—the networks of large national providers. But what truly sets us apart is our unwavering focus on our community. We strategically allocate our investments and infrastructure decisions to maximize the local, positive impact.

One example is our innovative Stealth Fiber technology, which allows us to deploy our advanced fiber network efficiently through existing Middle Tennessee Electric Smart Grid conduits. This approach minimizes construction and disruption, all while delivering unparalleled reliability for our customers.

3. Delivering a Customer Experience Rooted in Local Care

As you’ve probably heard us say before, United has a true stake in the community—because we live here, too. We’re the people you run into at the grocery store, at school events, and around town. And we believe that exceptional service starts with building genuine local connections.

As a local internet provider, we hire service representatives who live in the very communities we serve. So when you call United, you’re likely speaking with someone who understands your local area and relates to your hometown pride.

Our team also proactively monitors our network to detect and resolve issues before they affect our customers. To us, being local means being present, responsive, and truly invested in every customer’s experience.

4. Supporting the Community That Supports Us

We know that being a good neighbor goes beyond providing the best internet. That’s why we’re proud to offer free public Wi-Fi throughout downtown Franklin. It’s one small way we could give back to a city that gives us so much.

We’re also honored to support our local government agencies and emergency services. For years, we’ve equipped numerous rural and volunteer fire departments across Williamson County with free broadband internet access to support the vital work they do to keep our community safe.

What’s Next for Franklin and Williamson County?

Last month, we celebrated the fifth anniversary of our headquarters in Franklin by announcing an exciting new phase of growth. Our latest expansion will connect more than 3,000 additional homes and businesses across Franklin to our broadband network, delivering residential internet speeds of up to 8 Gbps—over 25 times faster than the average internet speed in Tennessee!

At the same time, we’re in the final stages of bringing broadband access to more than 8,000 previously under-connected homes and businesses in Williamson County. Once this project is complete, nearly the entire county will have access to the reliable, high-speed fiber internet they deserve.
